Christ in the Universe - Lecture
May 18, 2023 | 7pm | Free Admission | All Are Welcome
In recent decades, powerful telescopes have enabled astrophysicists to uncover startling new worlds and solar systems. This has led to the question: Is there life beyond Earth?
In this lecture Dr. Andrew Davison seeks to analyze this question through the lens of Christian Theology by integrating his training as a theologian and scientist. The discussion address questions including the imago dei, the place of diversity in creation, whether we would expect other life (if there is any) to be mentioned in the scriptures, the scope of sin, and whether the idea of multiple Incarnations makes good theological sense.
A reception and Q&A will follow the lecture.
Dr. Andrew Davison is the Starbridge Associate Professor in Theology and Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, where he has recently been working with a group of scientists to set up the new Leverhulme Centre for Life in the Universe. He is currently the Distinguished Visiting Fellow in Theology and Science at the Center of Theological Inquiry, Princeton. He is a priest in the Church of England, and fellow of Corpus Christi College, where he is also Dean of Chapel. His work lies at the intersection of theology, philosophy, and natural science. His books include Participation in God: A Study in Christian Doctrine and Metaphysics, and Why Sacraments? His Astrobiology and Christian Doctrine will be published by Cambridge University Press in May 2023.

RJTF Movie Night: Till
MAPC’s Racial Justice Task Force is sponsoring a Movie Night at the church Friday, January 13th, at 6:30 pm. We will meet for pizza, salad, dessert, and beverages, and watch a screening of “Till”.
In 1955, after Emmett Till is murdered in a brutal lynching, his mother vows to expose the racism behind the attack while working to have those involved brought to justice. Till does not depict Emmett’s murder, but focuses on his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley’s, fight for justice.
One member of our task force said he’s been reluctant to view this film. Others may feel that way, too. Here is an opportunity to experience this important work together with our MAPC family. Discussion will follow. Please join in! Sign up here for this free (donations accepted) event so we’ll know how much food to order.

Guest Speaker: Dr. William P. Brown | What the Bible has to say about Climate Change
From Creation to New Creation: What the Bible Has to Say about Climate Change
Plagues, droughts, floods, locusts, fire, infestations. . . . The Bible is filled with them. Today our planet is beset with mounting ecological disasters of biblical proportions. In this special adult education offering, we will explore what wisdom can be gained from the ancient Scriptures for such a time as this with resilience, responsibility, and realistic hope. We will also seek to answer the question: what does being a disciple of Jesus Christ have to do with stewardship of our shared world?
Join us for a special Adult Education session on October 2 at 12 pm.
William P. Brown is the William Marcellus McPheeters Professor of Old Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA. His writings explore the intersecting issues of ecology, justice, faith, and science from various biblical perspectives. He is the author of numerous essays and books, including Wisdom’s Wonder, The Seven Pillars of Creation, Seeing the Psalms, Sacred Sense, Handbook to Old Testament Exegesis, and most recently Deep Calls to Deep: The Psalms in Dialogue amid Disruption. Much of his work is driven by the desire to promote dialogue among diverse participants to foster mutual understanding and equity. Bill is ordained in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and loves teaching Sunday School. Bill was co-editor of Interpretation: A Journal of Bible and Theology from 1996 to 2003.
