Christ in the Universe - Lecture

  • Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church 921 Madison Avenue New York, NY, 10021 United States (map)

May 18, 2023 | 7pm | Free Admission | All Are Welcome

In recent decades, powerful telescopes have enabled astrophysicists to uncover startling new worlds and solar systems. This has led to the question: Is there life beyond Earth?

In this lecture Dr. Andrew Davison seeks to analyze this question through the lens of Christian Theology by integrating his training as a theologian and scientist. The discussion address questions including the imago dei, the place of diversity in creation, whether we would expect other life (if there is any) to be mentioned in the scriptures, the scope of sin, and whether the idea of multiple Incarnations makes good theological sense.

A reception and Q&A will follow the lecture.

Dr. Andrew Davison is the Starbridge Associate Professor in Theology and Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, where he has recently been working with a group of scientists to set up the new Leverhulme Centre for Life in the Universe. He is currently the Distinguished Visiting Fellow in Theology and Science at the Center of Theological Inquiry, Princeton. He is a priest in the Church of England, and fellow of Corpus Christi College, where he is also Dean of Chapel. His work lies at the intersection of theology, philosophy, and natural science. His books include Participation in God: A Study in Christian Doctrine and Metaphysics, and Why Sacraments? His Astrobiology and Christian Doctrine will be published by Cambridge University Press in May 2023.
