Special Speaker: Kekla Magoon | March 5-6

We are excited to welcome Kekla Magoon back to MAPC (by Zoom) on March 5 – 6.

Kekla is the award-winning author of over a dozen novels and nonfiction books for children and teenagers, frequently exploring themes of identity, community, civil rights and social justice. She was initially drawn to writing because of an interest in civil rights movement history--her first novels were about activist teens in the 1960s--but she quickly found that, through this artistic lens, she could participate in the vital social justice organizing efforts of today. Now Kekla's work involves much more than writing; she speaks, teaches, and travels, inspiring people of all ages to find their voices and be agents for positive change within the challenging landscape we occupy. Kekla is a Presbyterian Elder and was an active member of MAPC for many years. She now lives in Vermont.

On Saturday, March 5, from 3 -4 pm Kekla will talk with elementary-aged children and their families about her picture book biography of Thurgood Marshall, The Highest Tribute: Thurgood Marshall’s Life, Leadership, and Legacy and her chapter book biography of Ruby Bridges, She Persisted: Ruby Bridges.

From 4 to 5 pm Kekla will spend time with teens and their parents (if they’d like to join) talking about her new non-fiction book Revolution in Our Time: The Black Panther Party’s Promise to the People, a National Book Award finalist, and her novel, “The Rock and the River,” Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent Award Winner.

On Sunday, March 6, from 1 to 2 pm Kekla’s talk with the adults of the congregation will feature four of her books: The Rock and the RiverHow It Went DownX: A Novel, and Revolution in Our Time. She will share about her faith journey as one of the underpinnings of this work, which is a (perhaps unusual) form of Christian witness in the world.
