Why Black History?

9 am by Zoom

In many parts of the country state governments and local school boards are restricting what can be taught in public schools about history—Black history, including the history of slavery, Jim Crow, systemic racism, and the Civil Rights movement.  We cannot build a future with true racial equity if we do not understand, face, and learn from our past. Black history in this country is not just the history of African Americans—it is American history.  Come join Rev. Beverly Bartlett in a discussion of why we need to look honestly at our history.  Black History month is an opportunity to celebrate the contributions and role of Black people in every aspect of our society. It is also an opportunity to take an honest look at American history—and for Christians, the role the church played in justifying the institution of slavery and upholding racist systems and practices. In this time of deep division over race and our history, it is more important than ever to engage in courageous conversations.  Let’s have one on Sunday.
