RJTF | Justice Discipleship Course

If you are interested in helping the church to lay a foundation at MAPC for a strong, justice-oriented ministry over the months and years to come, please consider joining us for a five week "Justice Discipleship" course that will be led by Rev. Ashley DeTar Birt and Rick Ufford-Chase. The course will involve homework that includes podcasts, videos and some modest amount of reading, and will meet by zoom each Sunday starting April 30 from 5 to 6:30 pm (skipping Memorial Day weekend). This course is for those who would like to help provide leadership as the congregation explores new community partnerships and commits to concrete action that gets to the heart of structures of racism and systemic oppression in our community. More information and registration is available below.

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus’ disciples follow him, learn from him, are challenged by him, and ultimately are prepared to continue his work after his resurrection due to their experiences together. Inspired by this, we’ve created a Justice Disciples course design for us to come together in the spirit of Jesus’ call to justice to help us explore our faith, explore concepts, learn tools, and practice spirit-filled justice work in community. Join us as we come together to learn how to be agents of God’s call to justice, mercy, and love in the world.

Sessions are 90 minutes and involve Scripture, prayer, and embodied practice. Topics include:

  1. Exploring Identites and Grounding our Work in the Self

  2. Examining the Intersections of Race and Other Identities

  3. The Discipline of Decentering and the Challenge of Re-Centering

  4. Creating Courage: Practical Tools to Face Self-Censorship and De-escalate Resistance

  5. Creative Approaches to Identifying Partners, Assets, and Actions

Sessions will take place on Zoom from 5 - 6:30 pm on
