One Great Hour of Sharing offering on Palm Sunday
The PC(USA) and other denominations receive the OGHS offering every year to support the Presbyterian Hunger Program (36%), the Presbyterian Committee on the Self-Development of People (32%), and Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (32%). To note only a (truly) small sample of OGHS’ impact, we supported refugees from Afghanistan and Ukraine, granted thousands to migrant shelters, mitigated emergencies throughout Africa, Asia, Europe, and the US, expanded free school meals for 92,000 Washington children, supported language revitalization for indigenous Alabamans, helped 20 Ugandan women acquire title to their land, successfully lobbied for over $1 billion in homelessness prevention in Los Angeles, helped plant 60,000 trees, and supported food safety, seniors’ ministry, Black women in childbirth, sustainable farming, and much, much more.
Chesna shares why she gives:
“God’s kingdom has been sprouting and flourishing all over the world ever since the resurrection of Jesus broke through the old creation with the new. Every week, we meet the new creation in our world at the Table and around the Word, and God calls us to tend and bless it wherever it is growing. As I anticipate the resurrection this Holy Week, I’m looking for the ways that God is already using the church to be “repairers of the breach” (Isa 58) with health, abundance, rest, beauty, peace, home, mutual love, joy, and hope. As a Christian, I am bound to dwell on these things (Philippians 4:8). OGHS lets me give even a little of what God has blessed me with to the uncountable ways he is blessing others and remaking the creation. The whole earth is filled with his glory!”
Make a plan to give this week! You can read personal stories about the impact of OGHS here. We’ll participate directly in an OGHS program by packing and shipping 200 hygiene kits for Church World Service at the Palm Sunday Lunch after worship!
