Trio Fadolín
Sabina Torosjan, violin; Valeriya Sholokhova, cello; Ljova, fadolín
Trio Fadolín is a new ensemble with a unique sonority featuring the fadolín – a new instrument that encompasses the range of the violin, viola, and most of the cello. Their performance will bring together rarely heard music from distant lands – contemporary classical compositions from Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Latvia – as well as several pieces composed in New York City.
Their program will feature a work by Latvian composer Peteris Vasks inspired by the writings of Teresa de Ávila, Castillo Interior; as well as works by Ukrainian composer Vasyl Barvinsky, Uzbekistani composer Dmitry Yanov-Yanovsky, and Ljova’s Central Asian Dances, employing Uzbek and Tajik folk melodies, bring the concert to a wild close.
All three musicians in Trio Fadolín grew up in the former Soviet Union and arrived in New York as teens. Sabina Torosjan (violin) was born in Estonia of Armenian-Jewish heritage; Valeriya Sholokhova (cello) was born in Ukraine of Ukrainian, Jewish, and Russian heritage; Ljova Zhurbin (Fadolín) was born in Moscow, Russia, with Ukrainian-Jewish, German-Jewish, Polish, and Romanian roots. Together, they share a common bond of immigration, Eastern European literature, humor, animation, and music. They are here to tell the complicated story, to share the experiences of immigrant composers, to collaborate with immigrant artists, and to showcase places where cultures intersect.
