Donations to the Hood Library

Since its founding in 1931, the Hood Library has enjoyed strong support from the MAPC congregation. The Hood Library Fellowship is grateful for this patronage. One of the ways it manifests itself, besides the borrowing of books, is in book donations. We go through the donations and decide which books to add to the collection, which books to sell in the library cart, and which to simply give away, as they are not appropriate for the Library. In recent years, the Library has been inundated with gifts of books to the point where we’d like to set up some guidelines for donations.

  • Please limit donations to 10 books or less.

  • Donate books, fiction or non-fiction, published within the past 3-4 years, preferably by well-known authors. Best sellers are particularly appreciated.

  • Donate hard cover or trade paperback books. Mass-market paperbacks do not stand up well to library use.

  • Under non-fiction, please donate popular, rather than academic works. Examples of popular non-fiction authors include Joan Didian, Erik Larsen, Annie Dillard, David McCullough, James McPherson, Gertrude Himmelfarb, Simon Shama, John McPhee, and Elizabeth Kolbert. There are many, many more.

  • The Library does not collect children’s literature.

Any questions? The Hood Library is open on Sundays after the 10:30 service (except during the summer) with someone on duty. Members of the Fellowship, listed below, can also answer your questions.

Please visit us in the Library and select a book(s) to borrow. During the week, there is a check pad on the library desk, so that books can be borrowed between Sundays.

We add new acquisitions monthly.
